There's Nothing Like This
Yesterday, we had a full-on day in University. Our International Students Committee's ongoing efforts finally culminated in the Harmony in Diversity Carnival and the Curtin Idol Semi-finals.
It hasn't been the easiest month because there have been an inexcusable number of screw-ups during the planning of the event, but whatever the case, it all came together and worked out.
The day started at 4pm with the Curtin Idol Semi-finals at The Tavern. I missed the first hour of it because I was still in class, but managed to catch my favourite performers from the auditions, held about two weeks before.
The MCs Taf and Brian with my HAND-PAINTED banner. Mind you, that wasn't easy!
The judges, from left to right; Brenda Lee (established jazz singer), Simone Armstrong (classical music teacher), and Fozzil Jaffar (frontman of local band, Q):
One of the strongest singers from the auditions, Katherine Curnow:
My favourite of the lot; crooner Brad Ackland. He sings Sinatra likes nobody's business:
After the Curtin Idol competition, the Harmony Day carnival began! With the various international clubs selling food and other wares, there were performances and games at a separate arena in the courtyard for our entertainment.
Of course, there were the formalities that had to be done and it involved the VIPs and guests signing the event banner we had made.
VIP Jeanette Hackett signs the banner:
ISC Convernor Eric:
ISC Events Officer Samantha Ho:
My housemate and ISC Deputy Convenor Michelle Mok:
After that, we had James Webb from the Wadumbah Dance Group do a little didgeridoo demonstration. He was the same guy we invited to play at the Pasar Malam last year. He's good, but gets a little carried away and tends to tell really long, grandfather-type stories. Then again, he is a grandfather so we can't really blame him now, can we?
James also signed the banner:
After that, we basically ran amok with games such as the limbo:
And had dance lessons from this hot salsa duo:
And the Arab students got a sexy reminder of home from the belly-dancers. Their appreciation was well-expressed in their enthusiastic bouts of wolf-whistling:
Finally, the night ended with a spot of dancing and a parting shot:
